Which Tromsø winter tours fit into one day

Most winter days in Tromsø have room for one trip in the light and one tour in the dark. The table shows which daytime trips leave time for an evening northern lights tour.

The simple rule: one trip in the daylight, one tour in the evening. A northern lights bus tour takes about six hours, and the aurora is often most active between about 20:00 and 02:00. Any daytime trip that brings you back by the late afternoon leaves room for it.

Evening tours that take the place of an aurora tour

Some evening tours already look for the northern lights along the way. The evening snowmobile ride of about eight hours makes several stops for the aurora, an evening snowshoe hike at Ersfjordbotn lasts four hours, and the northern lights cruises from the harbour take about three to three and a half hours. On those evenings you do not need a second tour.

Two daytime trips on one day

In midwinter this rarely works. On 21 December civil twilight in Tromsø lasts from 09:31 to 13:53, so a long trip already uses all of the light. Two short trips can fit, such as a skiing course of two and a half hours and an urban floating session of two hours in the harbour. A husky trip and a whale trip cannot.

For a whole stay, see the itineraries for three to five days. Two combinations in detail: husky sledding and northern lights and whale watching and northern lights.

Questions travellers ask

Can I do two tours in one day in Tromsø in winter?

Yes, one in the daylight and one in the evening. Most daytime trips take two to five hours, and northern lights tours leave in the evening.

Which daytime trips are too long for an evening northern lights tour?

The whale RIB with the bus to Skjervøy, which takes about twelve hours from 05:00. Full-day snowmobile and whale boat trips fit, but make for a long day.

Can I do husky sledding and whale watching on the same day?

No. Both need daylight, and in midwinter civil twilight lasts only about four and a half hours.
